My opinion on this wavered between beautiful, lyrical and atmospheric period piec pedantic hipster bullshit. Perhaps it's both. I love the way Coppola captured the era, with its tacky wood paneling and ELO-infused soundtrack but at the same time it felt too simplistic and too obviously a period piece. It was so hypnotic but at times I saw myself seeing through it. I need to read the novel.
Beautiful, confident debut film by Sofia Coppola.
live your dream - don't dream your life... well, simply said..! nice dramatic movie, but too teeny like !
watching right now. I liked the beggining, and for now, I hate 3 stars. let's see.
something doesn't work well in this movie, and I think it's the script
I went through 3 different stages with this movie: the beginning was intriguing, the middle with Josh Hartnett was hi-la-ri-ous, and the ending, fantastic. The soundtrack perfectly complemented the film (or should I say supported it?). Yes, this movie always suggests; it never tries too hard to be analytical. That is what makes it great.
Josh Hartnett's wig make it to three stars :D
It's very pretty and moody, but it doesn't feel complete. It's like Sofia Coppola wants to say something but only tells us half of the sentence...
Perfect set, atmosphere & cast. Very well done.
Amazing filmmaking. Love this movie and saw it many times.
It is better whan I expected but the whole impression was spoiled by its lenght...still 4 stars from 5.
Truly, I don't seem to appreciate her films. She always leaves me with the impression that she wanted to analyze deep feelings but she wasn't really able to discover which ones they were.
Great music, though. "Playground love" by Air is one of my favourite songs ever.
I was extremely let down by this film. As soon as Josh Hartnett's character appears the film 100% crashes. The film goes from an interesting suburbia movie to a teenage girl heart throb movie. I think the only reason it got good reviews across the board is because her name is Coppola.
“Basically, ... what we have here is a dreamer. Someone completely out of touch with reality. When she jumped, she probably thought she would fly.”
Cecilia is the one who haunts me the most.
I have watched this many times.
coppola asserts herself as the closest descendent of antonioni, america will ever see. she has created a film about the sadness, the ennui, the displacement and isolation of the growth of a modern life. coppolas recurring motif of the values of a social elite is key again. she has a very stylish visual form, yet with a real content and conscience too. one of a handful of true auteurs.
I enjoyed this film. Watched it for a project for class. A little drawn out, wish it was more graphic/exciting but overall the concept was interesting and compelling.
How can you survive in a world that is changing before your very eyes when your parents don't want to evolve, when you are a teenage girl and when you are not intellectually armed to imagine a survival strategy ? That's the point of the fillm, a point that is not at all handled by the director. Sofia Coppola didn't want to present a psychological drama but rather a melancholic and lightly comic evocation of a strange event. The film could have been as fascinating as Peter Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK but unfortunately isn't. It has some very good moments though that deserve our respect. Recommended.
Every now and then, I just listen to the stunning soundtrack
It's the only thing I enjoy in this film
The soundtrack is orgasmic.
