I finally watched this uncut on Turner Classic Movies Underground (in HD, I might add) and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a bit dated and corny to begin. A funny thing starts to happen though, it draws you in. The story is simple. A constable goes to an island to look for a missing girl. He’d been sent a letter and a picture addressed to him personally. The constable (Edward Woodward) finds like on the Scottish isle not very innocent. Actually, it turns out to be sinister and deeply pagan. The island folk all proudly proclaim their pagan practices and this offends Woodward, who’s a very believing Christian. He promises to report them only to find he can’t leave the island. I won’t say much more but what starts out seemingly silly does work it’s way under your skin quite well. I recommend this film but beware shortened versions which I hear butcher the integrity of the film. I say check it out and stick with it. It’s creepily rewarding.
