I have always loved Satyajit Ray’s films, right from the beginning. Part of it may be the way he gets to the core feelings of things but doesn’t degrade the feelings with sentimentality. Also, his films are musical. Maybe because he is a composer as well as a director (and writer and illustrator, etc.). There is also the mystery and beauty of his films, and his actors. Is there a more exquisite vision than Sharmila Tagore?
