Absolutely mesmerizing. It's one of the few films that never loses intensity (because of the lack of subplots). And I'm sure that Imamura was envious of it, as it dealt with his milieu, but none of those immediate postwar directors like him were this anarchic. Kenji Nakagami deserves a lot of attention.
