The most romantic film of the year, a triptych about three couples (all played by the same actors) in different time periods of Taiwan. This very minimalist film, where the camera barely moves and rarely any dialogue spoken, evokes the ideas of love as part of its time period. That love and fate coexist with time and space, and that one cannot happen without the other. Hou Hsia-hsien is all about mood and his playground is human emotions affected by love and its imprisonments.

I’d say this trio of films is more than just alright. The first film is my favourite but I enjoy all three.

The first film perfectly evokes 1960s Taiwan and youthful love. It is such a simple story: a boy searches all day for a girl he used to know from a pool hall in his hometown. It’s hard to imagine that all that getting on trains and busses could make for great cinema, but it does. It is the small touches and the way the dialogue and the acting rings true. My favourite moment in this film- where the two lovers finally hold hands at the end.

It is interesting to compare relations between the sexes in this film with the next two films.

Me encantó.
