From what I’ve seen of the Star Wars Films, I far prefer THX 1138 to the whole lot of them. It seems to be far more visionary than the big-budget works of Lucas’s career. It’s a depressing Film, but it’s somewhat humorous in its absurdity; an automated God, who acts as a therapist as well. It’s visually stunning in its nakedness and simplicity. I usually can’t stand a lack of development in any aspect of a Film, but I really liked the basic story and the serenity of it all. It’s an extremely anxious Film, and that anxiety transfers well to the viewers; at times I felt as if I couldn’t breathe, whether from suspense or being terrified of the future Lucas has created. I really loved the ending too- there was no sun throughout the entire Film, no sky or light, and we finally see the great escape into sunlight and get that crowd-pleasing ending.
