TIDELAND is a disappointing offering from Gilliam, it seemed like it was poised to be a triumphant return from having THE BROTHERS GRIMM destroyed by the Weinstein Bros. TIDELAND has the classic Gilliam visual sensibility fused with images that evoke the paintings of Andrew Wyeth, plus Jodelle Ferland is a very talented child actress. The film has an interesting premise with memorable characters, unfortunately the story finds itself ultimately lacking any real direction. The plot just sort of meanders along at a poor pace, making its two hour running time wear thin rather quick. Maybe if Jeff Bridges had a larger role it would’ve been more interesting, but Jodelle Ferland carries the movie as best she can, it’s a shame the story can’t do her performance justice.
