Yeah, pretty much.
Terry Gilliam summed up 'Tideland' as 'Alice in Wonderland' meets 'Psycho'. A sinister and surreal fairytale, 'Tideland' is far less visually extravagant than Gilliam's earlier work, but all the more disturbing as a study of twisted childhood innocence. A flawed but daring Southern gothic nightmare. Starts off shaky, grating and unnecessarily shrill (at times almost totally unbearable) but unfolds into a fascinating journey into a child's insanity
One of the strangest movie experiences of my life... also one of the most magical. An absolutely superb film. Gilliam does it again.
The single most uncomfortable viewing experience I've had in recent memory. If you let this film sweep you off your feet, and go with all the weird alienating idiosyncrasies at the start, I think you'll find the ending as rewarding as I did.
I can't understand this...three stars?! A deep, disturbing movie about solitude! Absolutely loved it!
What a great performance from prodigy child Jodelle Ferland!. Tideland, underapreciated as is it, remains one of my favorite Gilliam films. A dark twist on Alice in Wonderland, the grotesque treatment of the characters pales in contrast to the vivid imagination of Jeliza-Rose.
The main problem with this film is that the characters aren't exactly like able. And the other problem is that most people can't stand the idea of a young girl being put in the grim situation she is. Overall it's not a total failure. It has it's moments. It looks great. And it's probably worth a viewing. But it is in no way Gilliam's best.
"Alice in Wonderland meets Psycho" - Alice I can see, but Psycho? Not really, but the comparison put me up with high expectations. After watching it, I am rather disppointed with Tideland. It is boring plus two words: Jodelle Ferland. I found her acting mediocre, verging to the point that her character's not believable anymore - and she does get increasingly annoying throughout the film.
Alice in wonderland on acid. An interesting but ultimately ineffective example of Gilliam's poetic, magical, sad and disturbing universe. The young little Jodelle Ferland is quite precocious and convincing in her role.
