Focusing on Lilly and Ragni, the young daughters of a widowed horse dealer coming of age in the 19th century, this provocative tale celebrates a love between siblings that goes far beyond familial devotion. But despite its potentially incendiary (and exploitative) theme of lesbian incest, this story of Sapphic sisters embodies a surprising sensibility of innocence and grace. Content to live and love only for each other, Lilly and Ragni initially seem destined for an enviably utopian existence, at least, that is, until the arrival of a handsome rogue from Stockholm (cunningly played by Ingmar Bergman’s leading man of the time, Birger Malmsten), who attempts to seduce the beautiful Ragni. —ImageOut.org
