The scene in this film where Carmichael starts playing the piano, then the guy comes in on the drums, then another joins in on the double bass, then another with a guitar, then the singers, etc., is to me the perfect metaphor for Hawks' films. Everyone joining in toward the goal of the film's harmony, discrete parts but forming the whole, orchestrated by a master; it's what film is all about!
Nobody ever makes reference to Hoagy Carmichael's musical (and acting) contribution to this film. Of course we remember Bacall's rendition of "How Little We Know," but what about "Hong Kong Blues" and "Baltimore Oriole." The latter is used as background music but if you want to hear the song in toto, you should listen to Barbara Lea sing it magnificently at this link <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua1vTbRYI4M>.
Bacall totally makes this film. She steams up the screen and I loved her effortless cool. It's like Bogart and Bacall invented sexual chemistry.
How wonderful is Lauren Bacall? Subtle, cool and devastatingly alluring... it's amazing that she was only 20 when she acted this role. Best line delivery? 'It's even better when you help.'
Who could ask for a better cinematic couple than Bogie and Bacall when their chemistry is so obvious that sparks off the screen. great direction, songs, performances, and snappy dialogues.
