In 1975 Stockhom a communal house called Tillsammans (Together) is home to radical hippie young people, dreaming to build a true socialist way of life. They debate about almost everything, from the sharing of the chores to the organization of meal cooking and the banishment of television. One of the community members, Goran, brings his sister Elisabeth and her two children to live at the commune. Elisabeth just escaped an abusive husband, but her middle-class mentality is shocked at the radicalism and sexual freedom of her new housemates. Her children have to understand by themselves this apparently mad new world of adults. Slowly Elisabeth and the children understand more about alienation, freedom and the risks of idealism.
With his first two feature efforts, Fucking Åmål (1998) and Together (2000), Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson earned a strong following for his acute, gentle sense of social satire and his remarkably well-drawn and sympathetic characters. Though his third feature, the soul-shredding Lilja 4-Ever, marked a notably dark turn in terms of content for Moodysson, his sense of characterization was perhaps stronger than ever, and the stark tale of a young Russian girl forced into prostitution gained him international acclaim.
