I got an impression that this is a French film with Franco-Japanese characters speaking Japanese and behaving like French people, especially when K chases the garbage truck saying, “I’m garbage, throw me in, too.” Although the location is in Tokyo, I felt like I was seeing the streets of Paris. And the French father who boards the bus could be a Japanese living in Paris (reversed circumstances, similar situations). K and Hinano even sing in French and sound like they can be alumni of the French lycée in Tokyo. The blend of two cultures is an interesting one, allowing for an unusual context and cultural flavor to develop in this pleasant and thoughtful film. The question of morals it raises is interesting, too, as a starting point for a useful and potentially fruitful discussion for the formative years.

This movie reminded me of the recent hit and comic-novel ’ V for Vandetta.’ It had that unique comic-book like aesthetic and dramatization of the characters. I also thought the subtle and sensual, and at times melancholic, relationship between The Vigilante and the young girl was as delicate and sophisticated as the one shared between Scarlett Johanson and Bill Murray in Sophia Coppola’s ‘Lost in Translation’ Furthermore, it was incredibly interesting to see how differently Tokyo was filmed and presented in these two films that share the same setting, yet a completely different world… What I thought was the most striking aspect of the film was the way the director deals with this unconventional love story with a great sensitivity. As a result, both of the characters turn out to be very real and very like able, event hough at times we don’t necessarily identify with their judgments…
