Honesty and other family values between parents and children lose visibility as day becomes night in the interiors of a Tokyo household. Secrets are kept on hold - spoken in heartbeats rather than words. Unwanted responsibilities impregnates this drama which I thought could be less low-key but comes in full favor of Setsuko Hara and Ineko Arima who suit their roles in the first film by Ozu that I've actually liked.
A great tragedy with very good cinematography and mise-en-scene, it's the best Ozu I've seen yet, although I still don't quite rank him among the great auteurs.
Setsuko Hara, Chishu Ryu, Ineko Arima. Tokoyo Twilight. When acting is an art form. And if there are still people out there who think all actors are the same interchangeable pieces, then watch this film and become enlighted.
My current favourite Ozu. The feeling of twilight maintained throughout, tonally and through visuals and sound, is mesmerizing. Chishu Ryu's greatest performance?
Falls into the trappings of melodrama that Ozu's best work so skillfully avoids, but damn if it doesn't work.
Everyone refers to this as Ozu's foray into some kind of "dark" film but I see it as one of his most spiritually redemptive. Yes, it is dark in the sense that it deals with more deeply isolated people, with the seasonal feel of winter, and with a more tragic gap between the pre- and post- war generations, but I was personally struck by how movingly it thrusts us into Takako's gradual acceptance of her own identity in relief to her society.
when I think I already sure with my favorite Ozu, then this one comes and definitely in my top 3 ozu. One of his bleakest, and arguably one of the best tragedy home drama.
