Synopsis

When theatrical mastermind Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) finds himself blacklisted by just about every producer in the acting business, he decides to thwart the entertainment industry by disguising himself as an older woman and auditioning for a daytime soap opera. Dorsey arrives for the audition in a dress and makeup. Calling himself Dorothy Michaels, he/she gives an astonishing screen test and is hired on the spot by the show’s executive (Dabney Coleman). Dorsey is an overnight sensation with the show’s fans, but as his secret career escalates, his relationship with his girlfriend (Teri Garr) suffers. Soon Dorsey finds a new romantic interest at work with his co-star, Julie. The only problem is, Julie thinks Dorsey is a woman and it’s not long before she’s trying to fix up Dorothy with her single father.

Sydney Pollack

Sydney Pollack was born to first generation Russian-Jewish Americans on July 1, 1934. After graduating from his Indiana high school, he went to New York and became a student at the Neighborhood Playhouse, a celebrated Greenwich Village school, where he studied under Sanford Meisner. He served two years in the army before returning to the Neighborhood Playhouse in 1958 as a teacher, and began appearing as an actor in live television dramas. His appearance in a John Frankenheimer-directed television production led him to a job as dialogue coach in the filmmaker’s 1961 crime drama The Young Savages. He quickly moved into television, directing on programs such as “The Defenders,” “The Naked City,” “The Fugitive,” “Dr. Kildare,” and “Ben Casey” during the early and mid 1960s, and in 1965 made his feature film debut in the director’s chair with The Slender Thread.

Pollack established himself as a competent, if unexceptional, director in such works as This Property Is Condemned, and… read more

Sydney Pollack/Dustin Hoffman, quoi. Juste un doux mélange tellement 80's, petit bonus pour mon grand favori all time aka Bill Murray. J'trouve la petite mise en abyme bien sympatoche, sans trop apprécier le côté un peu féministe de la chose (j'ai un problème avec le féminisme, mais ca va s'arranger).

I rewatched this recently for the first time in years and think it is so much more brilliant than it is generally given credit.

Hey! A mainstream comedy with wit, star acting, and intelligence in the department of script, pacing and character. Where are these blockbusters today?
