I love this film its feel is Dramatic yet the love story is within. storys transcends time. 40 yrs young wow
tHE USUAL PROMISES OF GREENERY OVER THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL ARE HUNG OUT TO DRY YET AGAIN AND THE LOVE/HATE FOR THE MOTHERLAND OF THE "FORCED" EMIGRE IS AMPLY TREATED: THERE IS A DESPERATE AURA TO WHAT LOOKS ALMOST LIKE A COMIC LOOK AT "WHAT-MUST-BE-LEFT-BEHIND"; THE CONFUSED EMOTIONS ARE REPEATED OVER AND OVER...
Nice portrayal of the surrounding environments, and I enjoyed the screen presences of the characters, but it took a little while for (most) everything to become connected story wise. I know I would have enjoyed it more had the dialogue and subtitles been properly synchronized. For me this first time seeing it, "Touki Bouki" was more informative than it was entertaining.
A universal story, told in a style that takes the best parts of the experimental french new wave and extends them to a unique, energetic style.
Once you get past the first scene...(those of you who know what I am talking about)....I would advise that you NOT eat a burger before viewing. Anyway. You have to watch it a couple times to really get a good "feel" for it. But, those are the kind of films I like best. To each their own, I suppose.
For new-wave fans, I´m not one of them. As usual, the parallel editing seems intentionally forced, creating a dashed linear plot, justifying the opened end.
This film is absolutely brilliant. Loved the imagery, the director's eye was flawless and the poetry of the imagery, music and storyline were captivating. Also loved the merging aspirations of the developed world, that has been built on the back of Colonialism, with the dreams and mysticisms of the African Continent. This is a stunning piece of work by an ingenious director! And the acting sparkled in a subdued fashion. Loved it!!!
A stunning restoration and beautiful imagery. Some ill-timed subtitles make for confusing moments, but it comes together beautifully. Felt very surrealist at times, with much symbolism and an eclectic ambient soundtrack. Really like this film....
Great ! loved the pace of the movie, the editing and the spontaneity. Quelle violence et quelle beaute'. Toute l'Afrique que j'ai connue en quelques minutes
What an amazing ride this film is, crude, impulsive, surreal and even cheerfully nostalgic.
They do what they want with the audience. Only few clips to rescue: live animal sacrifices, einsensteinian edition in the goat's sacrifice and very creative comparison between sex and the sea. Yeah, subtitles are a mess. Sorry about my ignorance, i guess the film is rich in African symbols, hard to get: the baobabs, the amulets, the cow skull... It worths as a document, it's too European to me.
Interesting enough piece, well-restored it would seem. However, the subtitles really are an unfortunate mess and go a long way to stemming any enjoyment to be had watching the film.
Great, great film, but please get the timing of the subtitles right before any DVD release.
