Hideo Gosha spent five years to work out the plot of this film, which profoundly describes one’s uncontrollable desires, brutish nature, restlessness with anxiety, and the eagerness to break through. Fujiyoshi Sakane, a mineworker, receives a huge sum of compensation after an accident. This changes abruptly: he starts an affair with his friend’s wife and then murders his own wife and son. When his desire for his friend’s daughter is not to be satisfied, he blows up their house. After an attempted suicide, he manages to escape from prison and becomes a fugitive. When this cold-blooded murderer met Chie, a gentle woman who falls deeply in love with him, his life comes to a turning point. —karagarga
