An unpredictable journey with one of the most beautiful poster ever made by @Criterion!
... bit on the boring side to modern eyes ... but if you can get into Tati's meditative state -- which I couldn't, fully -- there are strong images to be absorbed ... camera loves long shots w/ minimal cam motion ... action carried by cars & people moving across landscape ... destinations unknown, forgotten, not reached in timely manner ... car crashes look famous, but Tati's mental aim is something quiet & immobile.
I'm watching this film again today, and I always enjoy it. It's just a wonderful comedy and very cinematically appealing. I always love Maria Kimberley, the American model who plays the young press agent who is always changing outfits. She's a beautiful girl, and this was the only movie she ever appeared in.
My first venture in to the world of Tati. I was surprised and elated to discover this man exists.
The multi-car pileup scene is cinematic choreography at it's most genius.
i was surpised to have enjoyed this one as much as i did considering most people are of the opinion that this is his worst film. i personally have liked all of his films equally for different reasons. the only thing i can say is that some of the early short films are kinda iffy but Tati was still developing his own comedic style back then so they are highly derivative.
Odd moments of comedic precision do not atone for the general malaise of intention. Too corny to say 'end of the road' for Hulot? Sadly it was.
