shorter review may have been WTF??? or Korine is guilty of breaking his own rule here as he fakes it he doesn't make it
This is certainly lesser Korine but it's not a failure. A film that is both heavy handed and mostly meaningless, there are parts of Trash Humpers that are truly illuminating but he couldn't be farther from the much sought after "Ecstatic Truth". Look to "Gummo" and "Spring Breakers" for that.
I think this movie is underrated. It depicts horrible human material, but that's life, right?
basically Gummo without anything good in it. Perhaps it would have had some value as a short film. But there's just nothing but idiocy in making this a feature. Korine does what he wants, but every asshole has thought about making crap like this. It doesn't mean it needs to be done. HEY LOOK I EDITED A MOVIE BLINDFOLDED. WE HUMP TRASH. CRAZY EVIL OLD PEOPLE. Cool, Harm, real badass and shit. Now make something else.
The most random shit I have ever seen. Good shit, I mean. Follows the same language as used in Gummo, with a rawer approach.
Choosing to ignore the fact that I ever watched this film so as not to taint my first impression of Korine's body of work.
I have absolutely no idea why, but I loved this film. A lot. The format made this incredibly disgusting and disturbing to watch at the same time, making the whole experience of this film very effective. A very strict found footage film, making some moments much duller than others, which also worked to its advantage. Korine's true insanity shines through this film.
Trash Humpers is either the ramblings of a degenerate drug addled, porn-addicted, mentally bankrupt sociopath or the greatest American film since Mullholland Drive. I'll need to see it again to decide.
I don't know. I tried watching it twice, couldn't do it. Third time, I finally did it and I still don't know what I think about it. A bit too disturbing and empty in content for me.
Quite possibly the biggest and ugliest "fuck you!" to commercial cinema in the history of the medium. I think it's disappointing and embarrasing that the same filmmaker behind Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy has made this "trash". The eerily beautiful VHS aesthetic was the only redeeming factor.
The cinematic equivalent of hands free masturbation lacking in virility and inspiration. Emotionally bankrupt, void of purpose or meaning and endless at even just 78 minutes. The diminishing mind/artistry of Korine continues with his lastest short as well. I was such a fan of ''Kids', 'Gummo' and 'Julien-Donkey Boy' that these new works just make me so sad and bitter of an artist lost to hedonism. Too much??
...and Korine laughed all the way to bank thinking of his cult eating crap off his hand. Gummo was superb, this was fittingly...trash.
I'd call this movie a pile of garbage, but then it'd seem like I'm just making a bad pun instead of talking about how horrible this is.
That was horror. Geriatric morbidity, pre-pubescent masturbatory expectation, depraved infantilism. Difficult; but industrial noise questions while the body evaluates social infrastructure. Media work and worked media appeared balanced and appropriate. Yes, very frightening horror.
Hope this is ok to post here... For anyone in London, there's a double VHS screening of Gummo and Trash Humpers on Sunday Nov 6th at 6pm at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston, east London. More info here - http://www.shacklewellarms.com/listings/eventdetails/6-nov-11-harmony-korine-double-bill-the-shacklewell-arms/ and www.stilladvance.wordpress.com... Should be interesting!
I have to be honest, when someone tells me they like this movie, I don't believe them.
Sick, perverted, depraved, insane, off-puting, violent, random. And yet L-O-V-E-D every frame, every shot, every camera movement. The colours (those Greens on the foliage of the trees my oh my) were awesome, loved the grainy feel to it, the sound the "songs", the masks, the laughter of that fat kid. The tv smashing, the trash humping was like boner pills for me, greatly experimental and so different. Adored it. Go HK
i'm all in favor of grotesque and disturbing imagery being artistic... but this film seems have no other purpose than being disgusting. no narrative, no plot, and no character introduction... this is an utter mess. while maybe more of a film shown in art museums (regarding its genre)... still there is no complexity to it - any one could have made it, and i can't imagine the amount of drugs it took to actually do so.
