I’ve just seen Turbulent by Shirin Neshat, and it’s staggering. It engulfs with its powerful waves of sound, what a statement on gender roles!- the separation, the female with no audience, the man who’s just been applauded by the crowd now stunned by the the voice making itself heard, a voice imbued with the force of centuries, anguish, yearning… this film is a marvel, and says more in 9 minutes than many directors manage in a lifetime.
