Twilight: Surprisingly Entertainment Romantic Trash

By John on December 5, 2009

Twilight is commercial fare; an adolescent’s dream for fantasy & a simplified attempt to have a majority of the female audiences wooing at the sight of Edward Cullen. It will never be art nor does it intend to ever be. It is general Hollywood fanfare that subordinates its attempts at artistry (if any) to the whims of audiences by leaving out the thinking & keeping the clichés. It will be idolised by our generation’s audiences; forgotten by time & cultural changes.

Watching Twilight for the first time was like telling an angry mob that they’re wrong. When I went to the local cinema-house, it was as if my entering the theatre was appraising universal hatred. A group of guys were staring at me. What a nice way to watch a movie. A majority of the female audience were already wooing at Edward Cullen’s entrance. Of course, Hardwicke decides to photograph him in slow motion, emphasizing his body stature & exciting hormones in unison. Not mine. It was dead flat ridiculous & already, the sexual metaphor of Edward’s hotness began. Let’s face it, the moment stank.

This is the quintessential movie that would surmise the greatest number of reasons to hate it. Maybe Caligula, I Spit On Your Grave or Death Wish II would inspire more but… haven’t seen them so… change of topic. There was hatred for the poor performances, Catherine Hardwicke’s poor direction, the dialogue, lack of chemistry between the Cullen family & couple, hatred over the other residing vampire family, the tame ending, the love scenes, the lack of imagination & lack of intelligence. Those who’ve even given Twilight a chance must admit that it showcases beautiful cinematography, had great picture quality & de-saturates the colours to fit into the grim mood but who cares when everything else supposedly sucks?

It was a very mixed response. One critic has said that, “Twilight will please its devoted fans, but do little for the uninitiated”. My favourite critic said, “Why do girls always prefer the distant, aloof, handsome, dangerous dudes instead of cheerful chaps like me?” Well said Roger. Either you liked it or immensely hated it. I’m in the middle.

Twilight could be ponderous trash, one that could make you upset that worthless directors like Hardwicke are given chances to do feature films. How I see things is: romances are dreams. Don’t take it too seriously. If the chemistry works, it works. Ignore the cons & try to enjoy its pros.
