'easy rider' for the seveties, when it became painfully obvious that nothing's ever going to change.

Eliding notions of identity and direction in its characters, Hellman and the wonderful scriptwriting duo explore the road trip dynamics with such tact and insight we ultimately understand their intentions are far more ambitious than they seem, and their success lies in the simplicity and sheer elegance of their craft.

I guess freedom truly is an illusion wrapped up in impossibility.

This movie blew my mind. And I'll admit half of it I don't know why.

this movie felt very real and genuine, unlike 'easy rider' which, to me, felt posturing and pretentious. this movie is mesmerizing because of how artlessly everything is pulled off. i feel very inspired by this one.

how does a film with two non-actors and only two other actual actors, that has very minimal dialogue, doesn't use an actual score, and runs for over two hours become a classic? simple: it's that good. "contemplative" cinema, indeed.

Usually I prefer films that have a great story, tight structure, thematic precision. This film throws that stuff out of the window. It resists all intellectualisation. And I still love it. That's power.

Changing social attitudes fuel "Two Lane Blacktop" and as an accurate portrayal of shifting values the film is really quite significant. Beyond that however, I struggled to connect with much going on, and although the disconnection from the audience is obvious, I just don't think this ideal holds much beyond analytical purposes. Some nice performances are present here however, and the attitude is something to behold.

Sparse and distinctive. Not much goes on here, only three drifters driving a car on a road to nowhere - a looseness to the film and its plot that's appealing and striking. A sort of freedom and 'we'll do as we please' rebellion. It's existential and I love it... mad, slow pace and all.

The original American Graffiti, only... and Criterion said it perfectly, "no summary can do justice to the existential punch of Two-Lane Blacktop" and that could very well be because there isn't one, so unless you love cars, there isn't too much here.
