The only reason to see this, is to watch Phoenix in his last film before "I'm Still Here". Great performance, not such a good film.
This was the most realistic love story I'd ever seen. The characters were so believable and never over-the-top. The subtle emotions and the quiet atmosphere made it beautiful and haunting. It really captures what everyday life in an urban environment is like with its depressing and bright days, personified through Joaquin Phoenix's character, that it was moving and heartbreaking.
Isabella Rossallini's stare is memorizing. Other players are all people I've known. The tragedy: women scooping men.
Sure. There's still a lot to see. But excuse me if I doubt that I'll see anything even remotely close to this cinematic miracle.
Bipolar Leonard Kraditor wavers between aerial and frail Michelle who's always attracted by heights (talking on the roof, going upstairs never downstairs, etc..) and the more basic and maternal Sandra. This romantic literary theme, the opposition between Ideal and Reality, is perfectly handled here by James Gray. Now, one could consider that this intellectual exercise is a little vain. Nonetheless, I recommend this film.
A film that studies the theory of you never being able to get what you want/perfection is overrated. The performances are spot on but the directing is really what works here. The clashes of modern love and luck have never been so finely shown.
Joaquin Phoenix gives what has to be among the greatest portrayals of a man tripping over the complexities of relationships in all of cinema. For what it was, I didn't think this film could be any more perfect.
I read a couple of people saying this movie embraces clichés, but I really think that is far from true. The whole movie is really an anti-climax, you're always waiting for something to happen, sometimes the movie even seems to be about nothing at all. But the last minutes, they are so powerful and interesting, they totally get the movie away from the cliché side. A genuine and subtle gem.
One of the best relationship dramas I've seen in a long time. Amazing performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow. The ending will stay in your mind for days.
Well directed, truly touching, deep, amazing acting. leaves emotions well after the movie is over.
Truly one of my all time favorites, an instant classic. I would love to see Criterion pick this up and give it the DVD release it deserves.
Now or never will I ever understand the great appreciation for this film by so many respectable film colleagues. Flimsy plot, boring conflict, awkward direction... save for the excellent perf from Phoenix and some expertly lit scenes, this film is downright average. Perhaps below that.
Amazing performances all around, particularly Phoenix. I'm sure his rap is good too though. :|
