An assassin lies in wait for the president at a football playoff game, and when he goes on a killing spree, it’s up to two cops (played by John Cassavetes and Charlton Heston) to calm the chaos and catch the madman. The all-star cast of this 1976 disaster film includes Martin Balsam, Beau Bridges, David Janssen, Jack Klugman, Gena Rowlands and Walter Pidgeon.
It's easy to pigeonhole this as a disaster film, right down to the over-stuffed, often over-qualified cast. But this is not a film that provides an easy villain (the sniper's motives and personality are left eerily ambiguous), and the slowly building menace is effectively handled. Shot mostly on location, it also serves as a fascinating time-capsule of 1970s Los Angeles.
