t's funny how a film that makes one feel so much about family, ties and bonds, and connections, and lost shores, — in a non-pedestrian way, of course, — has the protagonist proclaim: "Family is what you shouldn't be". Ah Yanco!

At the intersection of cinematic montage and reality, Agnes observes a comparable thought process and artistic expression in her family. Not only does Uncle Jean create a juxtaposition-patchwork of materials and colors, he crafts a community that is just as motley and eclectic. Environments and expressions are not just the products of Vardas, but the Vardas are interestingly expressions of their products.

it was great watching varda investigate her own family and her roots. her films are obsessed with links and connections so this fits nicely into her ouevre. she has such an eccentric style to both her film and her personality so this film was enjoyable to watch. everything she does is sheer joy to me.
