Respectable and poised cinema – a seemingly Rohmer/Haneke offspring.
Like the polite Parisian, the structure is mostly gentle and refined, yet ever simmering, the kettle near whistling, the lid on the pot softly clanks.
This shot below, I thought, was a specifically striking moment of form breaking character – revealing a moment of hysteria that is soon enough stifled afterwards. The camera whirls around her exactly when she consciously realizes her husband is missing. It is quite breathtaking. The camera reveals energetically what her face does not show.
