But everything in this film is perfect. One of the best movies ever made. A true modern fable filled with rich colors, beautiful haunting images and huge characters that sink into your thoughts. A spectacular directorial achievement from one of the best Eastern European directors. I fondly remember the amazing music which starts the film off in the beginning and eventually guides the story to the superb “heaven” ending. One of a kind, a masterpiece that must be seen by anybody who considers themselves a lover of cinema.

Unfortunately not everything in this film is perfect. Modern actors are superimposed into found footage ala Forest Gump, but it just looks shoddy. The actors tend to gaze at the camera ala Jim from NBC’s The Office. (Maybe this is intentional. Perhaps Kustirica is commenting on Tito’s tendency to write his own history). At the halfway point the soundtrack molts from being a clever diagetic device to a nauseating bore. None of these quibbles is meant to deter people from Underground. I’ve seen it twice, and would watch it again in the proper company.
