Perfectly articulated my feelings while watching this.
Leather jacket, gray jeans, knee-high boots, hair in tangles, giant backpack, dusty all over. A look as iconic as The Tramp's.
This movie has restored my faith in the cinema. Varda-is a master, the imagery creates a unique world. There's a universality to this film, despite the focus on this young and free woman, it's about something quite larger. It's about everyone's search to find some kind of freedom from the oppressive forces that exist both internal and external and the inability to do so.
Why get people that she meets (and us as spectators) so captured by her? Why can't we forget her? We try so hard to understand and describe her but we fail. Instead we start to project ourselves onto her but we don't succeed in that either. A beautiful portrait of a young free woman and our inability to recognize the autonomy of young free women. Instead there are violence and conditions for our aid. Comply or die.
Beautifully filmed. Only perhaps if it were done today, a story like this would not be done so poetically.
THE varda masterpiece. this film is a perfect culmination of her obsession notions of links and connectivity as everything is just a cycle. also the trees in this film form a perfect imagery as their death shows the death of hope in this film in contrast to the 'varda' style. the main performance is absolutely sensational as mona becomes mirror for characters to see the emptiness and futility of their own lives.
Depressing, but it is a plus that Mona is not judged, just observed.Although not likeable,we can't forget her, just wish there was more explanation of why she became this way.
one of my all time favorites.i saw this on 35 mm at the wonderful international house. id really love the soundtrack.
Vagabond (1985) Agnès Varda Goes without saying the acting was sublime, Sandrine Bonnaire won the Best Actress César. And they say her flower is faded now Hard weather and hard booze But maybe that's just the price you pay For the chains you refuse --Bee's Wing by Richard Thompson similar theme: Wendy and Lucy (2008) Kelly Reichardt
I wish this film were available to watch for free as well! It's one of my favorites. God I wish I were French. =(
