its a film staring tom cruise and its a remake
Crucial elements essential to a good psychological thriller are severely fumbled here. Most damningly, the magic plot device which ties everything together isn't developed until AFTER the audience is told it is being used. This makes it impossible for the viewer to solve the mystery before the film allows... instead of fooling the audience the film cheats them.
I queued this film up at random and was pleasantly surprised. It's interesting that only a year after "Mission: Impossible II" - a movie widely accused of being a vanity project - Cruise starred in a film that so actively seeks to deconstruct his image, both figuratively and literally. All told, "Vanilla Sky" is another solid entry in the genre of mind-bending sci-fi movies such as "Dark City" and "Total Recall."
It just feels like Cameron Crowe was completely the wrong person to make this, I can't imagine who thought that was a good idea.
Never knew this was a remake, Nevertheless interesting movie about life and what really matters, vanity? wealth? love?
I actually like this one better and it is fun and more poppy, like a Beatles cover of a Little Richard original, if you catch my meaning, rawness replaced by more thoughtful arrangments...
A brilliant film, as was the 1997 original, "Open Your Eyes". Very underrated & one of 3 cult masterpieces released in the months after 9/11/2001 (along with ("Mulholland Drive" & "Donnie Darko"), all 3 having some aspect of "lucid dreaming" to the plot. In early 2001, the live action but rotoscopically animated "Waking Life" had been released. It was a big year for cllassic dream cinema. Excellent soundtrack. *****5
The only example I can think of an American remake being better than the original.
I've seen both; Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky. I prefer Vanilla Sky. Oops. Maybe because I saw it before the original and in the theater. AND I still like Tom Cruise. The goofy bastard's acting isn't that bad in some movies (Magnolia, Lions for Lambs, Tropic Thunder, etc.) and I think he's good in this one.
I thought it was a great film. Maybe because I haven't seen the original yet?
"Abre los ojos", the original movie starring Penelope Cruz, is much better.
