The technically stylish takes on real crimes such as Zodiac seem paper thin to this subdued and unsettling take on a real murderer, slowly pulling you into the world of the 'characters', all of them fatally flawed but human, amplified by a fragmented narrative structure that avoids leading you by the hand through a rigid timeline and allowing Imamura to bring in his view on Japan. It confirms for me his talent.
Don't know if a finer movie has been made. Can't think of another that so successfully skirts conventional psychology without committing to it reductively, without sacrificing mystery. The direction is protean and possibly random while maintaining an unwavering focus- a very rare achievement. Imamura knows that he doesn't have to choose between opacity and insight- the truth is between the two poles.
More than anything, I enjoy the dark humour and irony. Though I'm still perplexed about how to "read" this film, if it can be done at all!
The best experience I've ever had at a film screening. While the cold, objective look at a serial killer was certainly interesting, what most appealed to me was the thread of hilarious, perverse humor that ran through it. Several of the scenes had me uncontrollably giggling, though not many others in the audience felt the same way (besides an apparently like-minded old woman). Great film.
This is brutal, emotionally&physically. Quite a character. Probably the most mean sick killer with most ordinary characterized man precisely pictured in film. A nicely done serial killer's tale.
Enjoyed, certainly some memorable moments. Although I do not quite understand the freeze-frame-bone-throwing ending. To me, it ended on a cheesy note. :/
This film, in my opinion puts Silence of the Lambs, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and even my beloved Manhunter to shame in terms of its genre. With this, Imamura made the only film that can stand beside Peeping Tom in the serial killer genre.
As though VENGEANCE IS MINE is not a favorite of mine, I really appreciated the few fantastic scenes scattered in it like the final scene or the different apparitions of Iwao’s mother at improbable places. Now, I can perfectly understand that the film may be called a masterpiece by some critics or reviewers because Shohei Imamura is far from being an amateur at film making. I’m also sure that the film could be read from different perspectives. I just don’t feel like spending some more time to find the secret intentions of the director. It’s just the kind of movie I will have forgotten in a week. Good fiilm but far from being great.
A great examination and unique take on the classic case of a serial killer. I wasn't too keen on how Shohei Imamura chose to end it but its all but a small potential flaw.
Great Movie! Acting was brillant. The story revolving around Ogata's relationship w/ the Inn keeper was the high point. Ogata's character was a classic Sociopath with no clear motives why he kills except to just push his criminal behavior to the extreme and perpatrate his fantasy of murdering his father (another great acting performance) Great Japanese cinama
It had great potential (it's almost like Catch Me If You Can + Henry Potrait of a Serial Killer but not nearly as well made as either of them) but ultimately fizzles out. The soundtrack is really, really cheesy and doesn't fit the movie at all.
An interesting concept that never really takes off. Slow-going most of the time, it fails to generate any real suspense as a crime thriller. As a character study, it plods along without providing any convincing insight into the main character, or making him interesting.
