Synopsis

In Istanbul, a jazz trumpeter pulls the murdered body of a young woman from the surf. He remembers her from the night before, when he saw her at a millionaire playboy’s party and then later watched as she was assaulted by the party’s host and two of his friends. In confusion, Jimmy, the musician, leaves for Rio where he finds the sympathetic ear of Rita, a singer who invites him to live with her and helps him recover his equilibrium and his musical ability. Then, into the room walks a woman who looks like Wanda, the murder victim. Jimmy pursues her, not caring if she’s alive or dead. What’s going on? —IMDb

Director

Original

Jesús Franco

He was only 6 years old when he started composing music under the protection of his brother Enrique. After the Spanish Civil War, he was able to continue his studies at the Real Conservatorio de Madrid, where he finished piano and harmony. Being a Bachelor of Law and a easy-read novel writer (under the pseudonym David Khume), he signed on to enter the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográicas (IIEC), where he was only for two years, while he worked simultaneously as a director and theatre actor. Later, he went to Paris to study directing techniques at the I.D.H.E.C. (University of Sorbonne), where he used to go into seclusion during hours to watch films at the film archive. Back to Spain, he started his huge cinematographic work as a composer, with Cómicos (1954) and El hombre que viajaba despacito (1957), and later worked as an assistant director to Juan Antonio Bardem, León Klimovsky, Luis Saslavsky, Julio Bracho, Fernando Soler and Joaquín Luis Romero Marchent… read more

Often considered exploitation auteur Jesus Franco's masterpiece - it's certainly his most accomplished film, but that's not saying much. Part erotic melodrama, part gothic horror - Franco crafts a few effective scenes and memorable visuals. But the meandering plot is too slow-paced to be really compelling - even Klaus Kinski seems tame in a small role. Great jazz score by Manfred Mann.
