Slow and steady

By runfromfire on August 6, 2011

I had a tough time coming up with a good Visioneers pun for my title so I went with something a little more literal (if not a little bland). I also thought about using “Good Vision, Good Flick”, “Visually Pleasing”, “Visibly Brazilian (in a good way)” and “Galifiankis? I barely know her!” I also tried to come up with something using the word visible but came up empty.

I don’t think Zach Galifianakis gets enough credit sometimes. He seems to perpetually play “the buffoon” but it requires more than stumbling buffoonery to play a role that requires silence or extremely quiet deliver of lines throughout the film. He manages to convey everything through his expressions and/or mannerisms without leaving anything to ambiguity more than what is necessary. Judy Greer also plays against her established type (see: Arrested Development’s Kitty Sanchez or Archer’s Cheryl) here and does admirably. She deserved more screen time. Even if the film had been sub-par their performances would’ve more than made up for it.

Luckily the film isn’t sub-par though. It is reminiscent of Brazil without blatantly ripping anything off. It may take the same idea of a non-future saturated with consumerism and beige existences but it goes in different directions with it and Jared Drake makes a promising directorial but he doesn’t have the maniacal vision of Terry Gilliam. The pacing is necessarily slow given the material but it never feels like it’s dragging.

All-in-all a good flick.
