Synopsis

In his short documentary Vive le tour, Louis Malle presents his energetic evocation of the Tour de France. This, Humain, trop humain, and Place de la République, Louis Malle’s three French-set documentaries, reveal, in an eclectic array of ways, the director’s eternal fascination with, and respect for, the everyday lives of everyday people. —The Criterion Collection

A loving portrait of the Tour, of which I knew very little going in. Excellent camera work, excellent music by Georges Delerue. I don't follow any sports, but I could easily have watched another hour of this.

Riveting stuff, especially for sports fans. It's full of historical details like how cyclists used to go for beer runs during the race, and the effects of the very first instances of doping during the Tour.
