“Walk on Water” is a political thriller with a personal touch. It stars Lion Ashkenaze,a popular Isreali actor who shows great depth and charisma playing Eyal an Israeli intelligence agent who is forced to confront his human side in a buisiness where emotion is not allowed. He returns from a political hit in Turkey killing a Humas leader in front of his wife and child. He returns home to find that his wife has commited suicide. During a forced hiatus during mental evaluation,he is given an assignment to be a supposed tour guide to a young German visiting his sister in Israel. This young German named Axel is the grandson of a Nazi war criminal on the lamb. They think he might provide a clue to the Nazi’s whereabouts. Eyal and Axel are opposites that collide in a story about the conflicts of cultures and sexual orientation. These two men bridge a gap of misunderstanding in a world of hatred and revenge.This film is also a portrait of modern Israel and modern Germany and the underlying wounds that only time and forgiveness can heal. “Walk on Water” has a lot on its plate, but it is effective in its theme because it is so focused on the personal toll of people trying to find solace amid turmoil.
