I need to see this again! Maybe I'll pick it up in November haha. What I remember is this: a sexy schoolgirl lost in the desert, forced to take off her clothes a lot to bathe. I'm okay with this...groovy.
I'd first seen Walkabout years ago, and after finally finding a copy on DVD, I watched it again to work on some film pacing ideas. Roeg's use of detailed cutaways worked perfectly, as did his choice to allow some shots to linger. The film never became boring, though the aside to the researchers wasn't particularly needed.
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
The coming of age conventions are exploded to state of constant metamorphosis(see swimming scene) its less about kids growing up and more about moving from a state of modernity to one of transcendence (see the brilliant use of radio sound fx over the setting sun). Roeg working as his own DP was a stroke of genius as his camera work emphasizes the ecstasy of discovery with almost every new shot. Masterpiece
interesting tale of two adolescents from very different backgrounds.....some very memorable images...
British director Nicolas Roeg's masterful adaptation of the Australia-set novel is a visual feast matched with great performances and a subtly brilliant screenplay. Utilizing visual juxtaposition and implications rather than pages of dialogue, the film shows the disconnect between modern, "advanced" life; selfish, consumerist, lazy, and "primitive:" hard work, cooperation, and independence. A timeless masterpiece.
Surprised by some of the nit picky comments. It's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good. The cinematography was epic. I liked it a lot.

This is my kind of poetry. What struck me most this time around was how compact the first act is and yet how impactful and lasting it becomes. Carnal and blissfully seductive, WALKABOUT is a tonal masterpiece of mood and composition. So intriguing is its non-narrative voice that we forget the immediate "why?" and begin to find bigger answers in the dichotomy between nature and society. A beautifully innocent memory.

As beautiful and harrowing as it is, I feel that Walkabout contains some elements of Stanley Kubrick.
the kitschy soundtrack and the hippiesque 'paradise lost' theme are totally unnecessary.
Walkabout is wonderfully shot, with some truly stunning views of the Outback, but at times Roeg is certainly guilty of over-using techniques to get his message across. Regardless, this is a stunning film with wonderful performances from young Jenny Agutter and Aborigine actor David Gulpilil, and while the delivery may not be entirely consistent, the message presented by Roeg is no less poignant nearly forty years on.
A very naive critic of the modern civilization, very one-way and there is a bunch of ridiculous things in this movie that drive me mad. Almost landed on my list of annoying movies. even the visualities are stupid - rotting meat and intermezzo with animals over and over again. And the sequence where the girl swims ... kill me. Just too first hand and naive, can't really appreciate the good parts.
Disturbing and simultaneously graceful. Roeg's masterpiece is exotic, erotic and tragic. The scope of interpretation Roeg has allowed is overwhelming and the marriage between visuals and intangible ideas is superb.
Just watched this last night and found it really beautiful. The final scene is so touching and well done. So glad I got to catch this gem.
