Synopsis

Schani, Johan Strauss Jr., is forced by his father to forget music and to work in a bakery. Here he falls in love with Resi. The girl gets very jealous when a rich and beautiful contessa asks Schani to write a waltz for her. Schani writes and plays it, but he is always loyal to his girlfriend. —IMDb

With some subtle Hitch's signature style thrown in here and there, this musical drama is surprisingly poignant. He does not have the same intense affection towards Viennese waltzes as, say, Ophuls, but the musical scenes are all wonderfully realized.

Coming on the verge of his late British run of masterworks, this light musical comedy has always been overshadowed, and Hitch didn't think much of it either, but watch it for entertainment (and the director's increasing visual sophistication), and it's quite good.
