We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists takes us inside the world of Anonymous, the radical “hacktivist” collective that has redefined civil disobedience for the digital age. The film explores early hacktivist groups like Cult of the Dead Cow and Electronic Disturbance Theater, then moves to Anonymous’ raucous beginnings on the website 4chan.
Through interviews with current members, people recently returned from prison or facing trial, writers, academics, activists and major players in various “raids,” the documentary traces Anonymous’ evolution from merry pranksters to a full-blown movement with a global reach, the most transformative civil disobedience of our time. –SXSW
Self satisfied doc attempting to trace the evolution of Anonymous from its merry prankster style beginnings to a political force for potential change. Unfortunately its running time works against it and the lack of focus erodes what could have been an interesting doc. The underlying anarchy of an unchecked (dis)organization has led to offshoots with various agendas and purposes some for the greater good others not.

Great background insight into the hactivist group 'anonymous' and their humble beginnings. The doco highlights stunts and pranks and campaigns including their famous war with the Church of Scientology and also looks at wikileaks and other defenders of freedom of information while asking us to ponder the nature of protest in a digital age. 3 stars
