Dr. Marvin (Dreyfuss) epitomizes every controlling, anal, pedantic individual we know and how tenuous their grasp of people/reality is. It takes an erratic, obnoxious antithesis such as Bob (Murray) to throw Dr. Marvin into utter confusion and even madness. The absurd makes me laugh and “What About Bob?” delivers loads of it strapped with explosives. The more Dreyfuss twitches and snaps, the funnier it gets. Perhaps it’s sadistic to laugh at Marvin’s misery, but his is a self-imposed hell. If you think everyone else is crazy or stupid, then who’s the real fool?
