It's not really meant to be taken seriously. Just enjoy the ride.
This is one of the movies where I don't mind Nicolas Cage, but he's just crazy and weird enough that it fits the mood. This movie just made me realize how much Lynch like to play with the contrasts. What's normal? What's weird? What is beautiful? What is ugly? It's up to you to judge. Oh and I love the ending. Why couldn't I get such an epiphany?!
I enjoyed it more on my second viewing, but I still consider it one of Lynch's worst films. It's not bad, but Lynch takes his self-indulgence too far here. Without an everyman or a grounding in reality, the film is little more than weird shit happening to, I believe the word is, schlemhils. And the forced and grotesque sex scenes go from discomforting to just tedious. It's worth it to see Nic Cage sing Elvis.
It's quite cheesy and over the top a lot of the time but it completely works, a massively underrated film from David Lynch
oooh myyy... what a cheesy ending - but pretty cool & romantic road-movie with great dialogues / storys..!
I found it pretty accessible, it is very twisted but what Lynch film isn't, I laughed a lot at the black humour and the dialogue, so many great lines. Cage gives a great performance, I find his early work is his best, when he actually chose movies that suited his personality. Dern and Willem Dafoe both give great performances as well,
A movie to test your love of David Lynch. Hard to get past the metal music, Diane Ladd's constant screeching and Nicolas Cage's ridiculous Elvis impersonation. I'm sorry, Cage is not a mad genius. He's a flailing buffoon. The one real positive is that Willem Dafoe is hilarious here.
Did I ever tell ya that this here jacket represents a symbol of my individuality, and my belief in personal freedom?
Lula: (howls) Jesus, honey! … You better run me back to the hotel, baby… You got me hotter’n Georgia asphalt. Sailor: Say no more…
I wouldn't judge anyone who may be put off by the crudity of certain scenes, but with Lynch I guess you have to leave preconceived judgements aside and get carried away by his artistry, which is not a particularly hard thing to do in this film. Also, I believe more fairy tales should be scored by Powermad.
I haven't seen Wild at Heart in a while but I've got to say its not as good as I remember. Sure, all the Lynchiness is there in spades and Willem Dafoe alone is worth the watch but the 20s me and the 30s me will just have to agree to disagree.
This is one of my top 3 Lynch films and for me it's a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom.
An awkard, unconvincing and ultimately minor Lynch effort. Dafoe is suberb though.
