I sooooooooo want to watch this film. VERY difficult to find a copy over here in England.....
It's a choppy film but Ray's touches are undeniable. His handling of locations, where the Everglades are portrayed like another planet. His sympathy for outsiders where Burl Ives gang initially seems sub human but become in fact increasingly human climaxing in an unconventional standoff with Plummer, who's also an outsider. The feeling of folklore the film has is also testament to Ray's storytelling. Must see.
with an ecological theme in 1958, fascinating cast including stripper gypsy rose lee and circus clown emmett kelly, and some beautiful wildlife photography, it's a shame it's so hard to find. ray was fired from the picture, some of his footage scrapped and a cheesy soundtrack added, but the results are still pretty great. love cottonmouth's band of swamp pirates. thx tcm, altho widescreen woulda been nice

impossible here too. tcm is having a small festival this month for ray's 100th b-day
Ruby, I saw a print of WInd Across the Everglades last summer at the Harvard Film Archive, and I can confirm it's actually a 1.33:1 film. There is no widescreen version and what you saw on TCM was correct. Someone should fix the aspect ratio listed here!
At last, I can throw away my bootleg with washed-out colors because you can find now a zone 2 DVD in France I urge you to buy! As though I like a lot the first part of Nicholas Ray's career, I must admit that the trilogy PARTY GIRL - WIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES - THE SAVAGE INNOCENTS will always have my preference because, in the description of the heroes of these films, Nicholas Ray put a lot of himself. Masterpiece.
