Could you further explain your comment? It seems interesting, if it has some evidence. I understand the linear bit, but I think it has a purpose. The linearity almost reinforces her drive to find her dad.
I actually didn't find this to be a depressing film. Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", now that's a depressing film.
Oh, how I wanted to love this film that I genuinely admired but I could not. Some shades of depressing just play better for me than others. There's nothing I can really find fault with Winter's Bone other than the emptiness and lack of a sense of hope iit left me with.
I can't remember the last time that a film managed to depress me with scenery alone. Top notch cast, direction and cinematography. I'm not surprised that it was nominated for Best Picture.
Unsentimental look at an isolated community, with its own rules, making us feel like intruders. There could have been more elements to the script, showing more about the father.Well acted.
Astonishingly good film. A mystery/odyssey which looks uncompromisingly yet respectfully at a subculture filled with despair and danger where even the closest relationships involve caution and suspicion with great care taken to never give up an advantage or reveal anything which could ever possibly be used against you. One of the most genuinely human films I have seen.
Really overrated. John Hawkes is the only good part of this movie. It just has no plot.
"Never ask for what should be offered." That line has engraved itself in my daily life. In spite of this movie's dark saddening subject (what a story!) it is all heart.
"Something" has to see for american movie on your shoulder in the "American soul" continuously and brave, calm, impetuous My review: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdetiempoentiempo.blogspot.com%2F2011%2F04%2Fcine-winters-bone-la-medula-y-el-honor.html
Shockingly one dimensional for a film that wants to portray realism. Too linear.

I meant my remark as two seperate complaints. If you found the linearity worked for you, fantastic. That is the lesser issue. I can see how such a concrete device could be used to add verisimilitude, for sure. It just felt convenient here and didn't work for me when taken with everything else.
I highly enjoyed the setting and the characters in this somber film. The atmosphere and mood were set perfectly. However, I felt that many fairly important details and explanations were left out that could have brought more emotional connectivity from viewers. I was also expecting it to be a bit more gritty. But, all in all, the film was a memorable experience that I would watch another time.
Sometimes a movie can hit you hard as a rock. Great movie, amazing actors and a story that it's realistic and cruel, as life.
I will always think of Ree and her brother and sister, wondering how they are doing and what happened to them.
Some suspension of disbelief is in order if we're to accept a character like Rhee could exist in such a place, but the film is so much more engaging than the average indie flick - and bears none of their usual self-importance - that can be easily tolerated. Writing and performances were dully praised, but Granik's direction deserves equal credit: the leaden atmosphere is perfect and symbolism never feels strained.
I just finished watching Winters Bone, lived on H hwy for many years ( Taney Co.) As i began to watch the movie I was thinking.. I know these places and people. Then I was like WOW I do Know these people and places. Good movie! Bad represention of hill folk that actually live in the area, crack and pot are everywhere, but we dont cut the tree down just because it has a few bad apples on it ! Frank I hope U R well
It's the first time I've seen Jennifer Lawrence's work and she's got my attention with this incredible performance. She's great! I'm looking forward to watching other movies with her. And I loved Dale Dickey's performance as well.
Só é interessante pelo clima do filme, parado, quase entediante, acho que dá bem a sensação de como é o cotidiano dessas pessoas, que acabam, pelo jeito, recorrendo todo tipo de droga pra aliviar esse deserto de inverno.
