Y tu mamá también (2001)

By Paul Drude on January 7, 2011

I don’t think I have enough context to fully appreciate this movie.

My impressions after viewing it were dull.

The film is good. They touch on some good drama. The setting and characters are very real. Maribel Verdú is going for gold, clearly. The narrative voice overs are insightful and have some of the most interesting pieces of the story. And it’s got some good comedy as well.

But the majority of the film consists of somewhat rushed and awkward sex scenes, and periods of mundane dialogue between the main characters. Tenoch and Julio are supposed to be bratty, spoiled and reckless, and give some comic relief for it, but they end up mostly just irritating.

Apparently, this film has a lot to do with the Mexican political and social environment of its time. May be one reason why I just don’t understand it well.
