The international English title is rather misleading, and “Farewell Yesterday” would be a more appropiate translation, since Kluge not only refers to his female protagonist saying goodbye to freedom while awaiting to spend the next years of her life in prison, but also a leave-taking from wartime and memory is one of his main concerns. The film was made right after Ludwig Erhard´s period as chancellor which is commonly refered to as Economic Recovery and was marked by stabilization of currency and accelerated industrial growth. The protagonist Anita G. seems like a contradiction to the newly transformed society, and neither belongs to it nor to the revolting students who began to question the establishment and made demands on the deposition of former Nazi members still holding offices. Although Anita makes an effort to belong to a society she doesn´t understand and even wants to go to university again in order to study economy, but the conversation with one of the professors who criticizes her for not speaking French makes it clear that the establishment rejects her, and it´s first of all incomprehension which leads her into the arms of justice.
