Synopsis

Tinimbang, considered by Lino Brocka as his “first novel” and his first production for his own film outfit, is the story of a young boy growing up in a small town and the unusual friendship he develops with a leper and the village idiot. Their stories draw forth the true nature of hypocrisy in the small town and the boy bears witness and participates in the various emotions that throb under the seemingly quiet village life-prejudice, cruelty, forgiveness, and even love. In Tinimbang, Brocka clearly shows man’s limitations as a mortal being, but sends a message of hope for the movie, and in the end, speaks ultimately of rebirth and maturity. —IMDb

Lino Brocka

Lino Brocka was born in Pilar, Sorsogon. He directed his first film, Wanted: Perfect Mother, based on The Sound of Music and a local comic serial, in 1970. It won an award for best screenplay at the 1970 Manila Film Festival. Later that year he also won the Citizen’s Council for Mass Media’s best-director award for the film Santiago!.

In 1974 Brocka directed Weighed But Found Wanting, which told the story of a teenager growing up in a small town amid its petty and gross injustices. It was a box-office hit, and earned Brocka another best-director award, this time from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS).

The following year he directed The Claws of Light, which is considered by many critics to be the greatest Philippine film ever made – including British film critic and historian Derek Malcolm 1. The film tells the allegorical tale of a young provincial named Julio Madiaga who goes to Manila looking for his lost love, Ligaya Paraiso. The episodic plot… read more

a great melodrama in the tradition of Douglas Sirk, George Stevens, and contemporary filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. All who have made films that deal with relationships doomed by class separation and elitism. most revealing was Brocka's unapologetic portrayal of the Spanish elite that still remains in the Philippines, as well as the "big brother" depiction and hypocrisy of the Catholic church.

As a filipino youth in the Philippines, its not considered cool to like Filipino movies. I used to not like Filipino movies at all...until recently. Although this country has produced a ginormous amount of terrible films and overshadowed the classics, there are still numerous gems that a self respecting movie buff must see. One classic is "You Were Weighed But Found Wanting", about a privileged young man in a small town who seem to be the only one who sees how hypocrytical his town is.This movie tackled themes like bigotry, politics even psychology. One of Brocka's best, also check out "Three,Two,One",the movie that made me a Brocka convert.
