the fuck did kitano do to zatoichi? he managed to take all of what makes the character badass and replaced it with a boring, silent, gore hungry main with frosted highlights and alien eyes. the fight scenes were boring with pathetic effects and the side characters undeveloped. i'll stick to my shintaro katsu's.
This was amazing. I love the combination of humor, action and drama. Kitano did an amazing job on both sides of the camera here. The action scenes were thrilling, the soundtrack was cool and everything just worked. I loved the look of the film, Kitano does violent action the way it should be done; slow simmering and with a huge helping of cool. I can't recommend this one enough.
Attempts to do in a single film what the original series did over twenty six (not to mention a hundred television episodes). The result is a pathetic hodgepodge of tones that doesn't even come close to capturing the spirit of the original series. To make matters worse, Kitano chose to use CGI for all the carnage and it looks absolutely horrible. Don't waste your time with this dreck, just watch the originals.
Mediocre and utterly superfluous bastardization of one of film's greatest sagas. 2/5
The bizarro tap dancing sequence at the end is worth 5 stars alone. So unexpectedly wierd I wasn't sure what I was watching, but I knew I loved it.
THe effects and the shos were exellent. However it is so weird!!! Weird than Lynch... I don't get it when they dance at the end.... It lacks content....
I am a somewhat Takeshi fan. That "somewhat" is due to his insistent on "borrowing" from mass media and works of others. The genre of samurai stories of the past is well worn thin. Dying the blind Samurai hair "Blonde" is not going distract the audience from the obvious - lack of ingenuity and plot.... Sorry Beat. This is not a very strong film here, perhaps only to the new audience of Japanese cinema.
Kitano just charms the pants right off me, and this film in particular hit me where it counts because of the swordplay. Also, the male geisha's dance was beautiful.
Riveting and at the same time energetic. Kitano's surprise hit is also a well-conceived and charming pic.
This is a verry entertaining movie. It's verry well done, it's dramatic. The only problem with this film is the 3D blood effects. I don't know how this film compares to the original film as I have not seen them.
