Toronto (TIFF in Concert)

Synopsis

The July 3rd, 1973 historic concert of the ‘leper Messiah’. This was to be David Bowie’s last concert with the the Ziggy persona and the Spiders from Mars. A great medley of ‘Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud’/‘All The Young Dudes’/‘Oh! You Pretty Things’, a Lou Reed cover, and a Rolling Stones cover are but some of the highlights. —IMDb

Director

Original

D.A. Pennebaker

One of the founding fathers of “direct cinema”, American filmmaker’s adopted name of choice for “cinema verite”, and perhaps its best known practitioner during the 1960s and early 70s, Pennebaker helped construct a style of storytelling and an attitude toward his subjects (often political figures or entertainers) that influenced a generation of nonfiction filmmakers. Pennebaker later established himself as a member of Drew Associates, which included major documentarians… read more

Freak out... far out! Bowie is some kind of god, and so far the only living thing to successfully implement the mullet. This is the last show of the Ziggy Stardust tour and it features costume ch-ch-ch-changes to the max and a blistering performance from Mick Ronson. It also features THE definitive version of Moonage Daydream.

Pennebaker's done better film-wise, but the strength of the concert alone is enough to earn five stars from me.

I was totally transported by this beautifully shot film of a unique concert! David Bowie is wonderful in this, and you could tell that he was so very “into it”; he also looked a little sad at times…  read review
