Don't You Have Docs?, This months theme 'Begin to End'
by DYHD?
So here it is. Dust off your polygraph machines and sharpen your pencils people as the Don’t You Have Docs? documentary channel launches skyward on MUBI Garage. From now on you'll find it here.
Don't You Have Docs? is a Garage project and a screening program of short documentaries curated around a theme or style. Each month we'll bring to you the best, most daring and thought provoking short documentary films that Mubi Garage has to offer.
The first program has been curated by the four members of the Dont You Have Headphones? collective. Each chose 2 films from the Garage around the theme 'Begin to End'. These selections have created an eclectic program of films from around the world. 'Holes', directed by Niels Wee ponders the philosophical meaning of... holes. Mark Kendall provides an insightful portrait of an equally philosophical watch maker in 'The Time Machine'. 'The Lion's Head' by Alex Barrett and 'Eveofrayworks' by Al Ibrahim both employ observational styles to provide snapshots of festivities that are literally worlds apart: ice carving in the UK in the first instance and Malaysian kids playing with fireworks in the second. In 'The Majestic' Australian filmmaker Lucy Gaffy, takes us on a journey through the oldest continuously running silent theatre in the world and Joriah Goad explores the dangers of good Samaritanism in his monologue piece 'Wheels'. Finally two films take us to the philosophical and intriguing world of human endings –Mark & Angela Walley direct 'At the Hour of Our Death' about a photographer who turns the bodily stains of dying into artworks and Angeline Gragasin's 'Ecstasy of Decay No.1: Your Mortician' exposes us to the world of corpse logistics and transportation in the modern world.
Mark Kendall
After signing off on the program we were then lucky enough to organise an interview with one of the filmmakers from the program, Mark Kendall. After the mathematical mastery of working out time differences between Melbourne and New York, we caught up with Mark via Skype and recorded it for your listening pleasure. Mark gave us an insight into the processes behind the intuition, sensitivity and commitment to character and story that are the benchmarks of 'The Time Machine'. He also gave us an insight into what we might expect from him next. Loop Bar Melbourne, Australia
And finally, our real world gathering of people and films is just around the corner! The screening program launches at Loop Bar in Melbourne, Australia on February 21. We are extremely excited (and also a little bit nervous) about our first ever screening. But with so much great content we are sure it will be a blast. We're also on the look out for people to host the program in other cities, so please get in touch via our website if you'd like to get on board. Looking forward to seeing you there (or here).
