In 2007, John Woods experienced the great tragedy of his life in the final weeks of his senior year: the murder of his girlfriend, Maxine Turner, and 31 other students and faculty in the Virginia Tech shooting. Four years later, he is the most recognizable figure in the opposition to the series of bills Texas legislature introduced trying to force colleges and universities to allow concealed handguns on campus.
