He's in the 365 Directors list. And this list is partially down to personal taste anyway,
I think it's by far his best film, has the single finest performance by a actor in a Hitchcock film, visually stunning and innovative and big departure in tone and style from his previous films, I think it's his masterpiece.
Brilliant list. Brilliant directors. Brilliant films. Although, I watched Le Silence De La Mer for the first time the other day on blu-ray and was deeply affected by it. Would consider adding that film to the list of essential Jean-Pierre Melville films. I too would question Pasolini not making a list of 101(!) essential directors though.
Le Silence de la Mer is fine, it's often the case that i could add another film for a director, it's hard to know where to cut off, or the list would be too long.. Pasolini may well deserve a place, i guess my own taste has tipped against him, whereas i've chosen some "wild card" neglected but favourite directors..
Wow, this is quite the list. Thank you for this, it will be a great reference. Have you seen all these films?
Wow, impressive, I'd be surprised if I've seen half these films. I feel like such an apprentice here haha. My "films to watch" list has grown exponentially since I joined Mubi.
okay, so if i see all this i can call myself a beginning cinephile. very challenging, monsieur :D
it seems a little strange to me there's not any Pasolini film on your list ( even The Gospel ... ) , whereas there's five Bertolucci film on it ...
Where is Happy together of Wong Kar Wai, and Lars Von Trier?? Its a great list!!!!
Smashing list! But I would argue the addition of FUNNY GAMES (either version will do) to Michael Haneke's list of essential films as it lays out his views on cinema and contemporary culture more plainly than any other movie (and it attracted a great deal of publicity for a director not much known outside of continental Europe before its release). I'd also suggest the addition of DAMNATION to the list for Belá Tarr, as it is the film that cemented the style he has now become famous for.
I'm just askin but y did u choose The dead over the asphalt jungle?
Lot's of these directors essential films are missing... And lot's of essential directors missing but I can forgive the latter since you restricted yourself to a mere 100.
Oh i much prefer Antonioni but i'm trying to be fair to the general consensus, and though i dislike L'Argent and most late Bresson it would have been more trouble than it was worth to leave it out, and of Bresson films those 6 seem to enjoy the highest reputation, as do the 5 Antonioni. For pure favourites i've got my favourites list.
6 for Bresson but 5 for Antonioni? :( you should keep it in an equal number of films, 3 for example ;))) edit: and raise it to 500 directors like that book they released!!! (of course not the same choices, hehe)
you need Sen and Muratova here ;) Inland Empire and House of Flying Daggers????? alright, alright,i won't complain, haha ;)
aaaaa, an intriguing project, unfortunately, Erice or Malick cannot participate but i expect a lot of names to appear around here with 5+ films ;) by the way, your Hitchcock selection is the one i'd disagree most, i'd focus more with 3 films of his English period.
