Certainly one of the great years for American studio movies. Most of these directors had developed their chops in silents, seemingly demanding that one add a certain style and syntax to storytelling which worked to their advantage with the eventual use of sound; especially when Hollywood started utilizing the nation's best fiction writers and dramatists to write screenplays. Throw in actors who'd been groomed into stunning movie stars, and the greatest technicians in the world due to the European influx to escape Naziism. Voila!
