1940-9: The Decade According to Kenji

By: Kenji

Kind Hearts and Coronets

A strong decade for UK, it seems not so much for world cinema beyond Anglophone films, largely due to WW2 (if not my ignorance), so lots of famous “classics” here, not very many hidden treasures sorry. List in preferential order. I’m not so keen on His Girl Friday, Phildelphia Story, Sullivan’s Travels, Rome Open City, Brief Encounter..

To see:
Tower of the Seven Hunchbacks (Neville) Spain
Douce (Autant-Lara) France
Una Familia de Tantas (Galindo) Mexico
Somewhere in Europe (Radvanyi) Hungary

the 1940s wasn’t the strongest decade for Mizoguchi or Japan but by all accounts 2 by Mizoguchi- Woman of Osaka and Life of an Actor-, both lost, were excellent.

Some great films here. I would have put Beauty and the Beast in the top 5, but that's a preference thing. Also I would add The Great Dictator.

Well, Late Spring is most certainly one of the top two of the 40s, but everyone knows The Third Man is the best from that decade ;)
